Cracks in Time: Ten Years of Change Through Her Eyes

Curator: Kiyono Sakashita

Cracks in Time: Ten Years of Change Through Her Eyes brings together the representative works of six contemporary Chinese women artists, offering a cross-cultural dialogue within the Swiss context. The exhibition explores how these artists use visual expression to respond to the ruptures and imprints of social transformation in an era of change.
Their works carve out “cracks” within visual and conceptual structures—temporal and perceptual fissures through which the complex entanglements of technology, nature, urban life, memory, and emotion are revealed. These cracks are not merely disruptions, but also points of entry: they uncover hidden realities and refract personal perspectives, attitudes, and positions. At the same time, they reflect each artist’s distinct methodology for reimagining the world through art, framed by historical tension, technological shifts, sensory experience, and social transition.
A crack is both a fault line and a passage. It allows what is concealed to shimmer faintly and makes visible the truths embedded within existing structures. It is a temporal form and a mode of perception—one that documents collapse while connecting to regeneration, a conduit through which thought and emotion pierce the surface of reality. Through fragments, delays, echoes, and afterimages, the artists reshape modes of perception and rhythms of seeing, each offering a distinct incision into the fabric of the everyday.
The past decade, though brief in the arc of an artist’s career, represents a period of unusual intensity and opportunity. After a wave of ideological and aesthetic disruption, women’s art entered a phase of quiet submergence. Faced with unprecedented global crises and geopolitical shifts, these artists have begun to explore new aesthetic possibilities through forms of language, bodily self-technologies, and emerging media. Often, the restrained poetics found in the work of mid-career women artists constructs subtle metaphors between nature and technology, nature and the transcendent, offering a concealed aesthetic “birthmark,” a quiet form of resistance, and a story waiting to be written.
It is through “her eyes” that a distinctive gaze emerges: attentive, reflective, inward-looking. This gaze subtly escapes the confines of linear time and the accelerated temporality of fashion and spectacle. Here lies the compelling authenticity of an exhibition centered on gender: the power to suspend chronology and generate new ways of seeing.
Alongside the exhibition, six documentary short films will be screened on site, each devoted to one of the six artists. These films offer intimate insights into the artists’ creative contexts, living environments, and visual languages. As an interwoven extension of time and space, they form a cinematic annotation on viewing, recording, and representation.

Cracks in Time: Ten Years of Change Through Her Eyes
