Shi Liu
Born in China in 1995, Shi Liu lives and works between Beijing and Los Angeles. Her multimedia practice spans film, installation, and robotic painting, reflecting a deep inquiry into the shifting boundaries between humanity and machine intelligence.
She began her academic journey in Art History at Brown University, but left to pursue a career in robotics. Over nearly a decade, she founded multiple companies in the field—ranging from AI to brain-computer interfaces—and was recognized by Forbes “30 Under 30” for her contributions.
After leaving the tech world, Shi Liu turned to art to poetically reinterpret the logic of machines. In her installations, robots mimic the handwriting of her late grandfather. In her films, she documents the emotional journey of the first patient treated with brain-computer interface for depression—probing how frontier technologies rewrite our sense of self.
Her works are part of the permanent collections of institutions such as Brown Investments and Penang State Art Gallery. Navigating memory, trauma, and identity through technological forms, Shi Liu maintains a clear yet tender voice—oscillating between algorithm and intuition, silence and signal.
